Biography

Dr. Ankit Kumar, an Assistant Professor (Research) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology (TIET), Patiala, has a distinguished research profile in laser and plasma-based metal surface modification. Following a one-year Postdoctoral Fellowship (Jan 2024–Dec 2024) at IIT Bombay, Dr. Kumar has advanced his expertise in surface modification of metal alloys, focusing on enhancing performance under extreme conditions. Specializing in advanced hard coatings such as Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD), Directed Energy Deposition (DED), and thermal spray methods, his research also extends to additive manufacturing of metal components, with an emphasis on optimizing surface properties for biomedical, automotive, and aerospace applications. Dr. Kumar completed his Ph.D. at IIT Roorkee in 2023, focusing on improving the mechanical, tribological, and corrosion-resistant properties of metal substrates. He has authored numerous research papers and book chapters in leading international journals. With extensive experience in advanced characterization tools including FESEM, GI-XRD, Powder XRD, AFM, Contact Angle Goniometry, and sliding wear testing. Dr. Kumar brings a comprehensive and innovative approach to materials research and development.
