Biography: Dr. Ashish Singla is an active researcher in the area of flexible manipulators, underactuated systems, redundant manipulators, dynamics and control of real-time systems and assistive/wearable devices. He has more than 20 years of experience in industry, teaching and research. He received his doctoral degree in the field of flexible manipulators from IIT Kanpur in 2012. Presently, he is working as an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala. Dr. Singla visited University of Gävle, Sweden in 2015 as a Visiting Researcher and in 2017, he worked as a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, State University of New York, Stony Brook, USA to do research in the field of wearable and assistive devices. Dr. Singla is involved in many national and international collaborations and published many papers in SCI journals and international conferences. He has got project funding of more than 2 Crore Rs from DST-SERB, DRDO and other agencies. He has delivered 70+ invited talks at various IITs, NITs and other institutes across the country, supervised 1 PDF, 1 PhD, 30+ Master students and is currently guiding 3 PhD Students in the area of robotics and control.

Research was carried out in the form of a joint project proposal to develop a mobility assist sit-to-stand and ambulation support device to improve quality of life and independence for persons with functional limitations

During this visit, one collaborative project proposal was written between UGAV and TIET. The aim of this collaborative research project was to extend the current research at Gävle in physical assistant exoskeletons to develop a CVT-based hybrid mechanism which can offer a low-tech torque variation and motion reversal solution as a replacement of costly microcontrollers and harmonic drives. The distinct feature of this hybrid mechanism is reducing the maximum torque requirement, battery usage and to increase the motor efficiency.
