Biography

Dr. Abhishek Ghosh, an Assistant Professor (Research) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology (TIET), Patiala, is a dynamic Metallurgical researcher in different material-based alloy design and processing. His research interests are ferrous, non-ferrous alloys, severe plastic deformation (SPD), Machine learning, Additive Manufacturing, Finite element method (FEM), associated mechanical properties, microstructure, and crystallographic texture.

At UQAC in Canada, he held the position of postdoctoral researcher, engaging in research on Additive Manufacturing and the hot deformation characteristics of aluminum alloys and composites, making extensive use of high-quality Electron microscopes such as TEM, SEM, and EBSD. In addition, he has also worked under the Indo-Belgian collaborative project and had the opportunity to use TEM, EBSD, and DSC extensively for metallic samples at Ghent University, Belgium. Besides, he has maintained a strong academic collaboration with some renowned universities (UQAC Canada, IISC Bangalore, and National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli). As the outcome of this collaborative work, he has developed his expertise in analyzing the crystallographic texture measured by XRD and EBSD. Currently, he aims to work on Machine learning enhanced Additive Manufacturing Techniques to promote the adoption of innovative methods, conserve time, energy, and resources, and minimise waste. He can also collaborate strongly with other academic institutions (national and international) and industrial partners by writing innovative research proposals.

Technical Skills

  • Solid Knowledge of physical and mechanical metallurgy, foundry processes, and forming processes (ECAP, rolling, etc.) of aluminum and its alloys.
  •  Gained experience in heat treatments of aluminium alloy (homogenization, ageing).
  • Characterizing materials with all kinds of methods, such as optical and electron microscopes and various image analysis software, and other characterization techniques (OM, SEM, EBSD, OIM, TEM, DSC, etc.).
  • Evaluation of mechanical properties, including the hardness test, tensile test, impact test, and their fracture surface characterization.
  • Experienced in evaluating the relationships between microstructure and texture-related mechanical properties, for an industrial thermo-mechanically treated and micro-alloyed medium carbon steel bar.
  • Expert in crystallographic texture analysis by EBSD and XRD methods.
  • Machine Learning Approaches for Materials Design: Microstructure property correlation
  • Experience in Finite element method (FEM) by evaluating the distribution of plastic strain, effective stress fields, and damage prediction.
